KINGS, Season 1

Film serial KINGS adalah versi modern atau suatu kisah yang diadaptasi dari kejadian di dalam Alkitab yang mengupas karakter Raja-raja pertama Kerajaan Israel: Saul dan Daud. Dalam film ini ke dua tokoh tersebut diwakili oleh King Silas Benjamin (Ian McShane) dan seorang prajurit muda/ seorang musisi David Shepherd (Christopher Egan).

King Silas diceritakan sebagai penguasa dari 'kerajaan imajiner' yang bernama Gilboa. Dalam film ini The Kingdom of Gilboa ini dibuat secara kultur dan suasana yang mirip dengan keadaan di Amerika Serikat sekarang. Michael Green penulis dan kreator film ini cukup piawai mengadaptasi kisah-kisah dimasa lalu itu menjadi suatu kisah di zaman modern ini. King Silas memiliki kekuasaan yang absolute, karakternya begitu kuat dan berwibawa. Namun seperti yang kita kenal dalam kisah Daud vs Saul, King Silas betapapun ia memiliki kuasa, ia tetap iri-hati kepada anak muda sederhana, David Shepherd. Sikapnya yang aneh ini membuat hubungannya dengan Rev. Samuels (Eamonn Walker) semakin renggang.

Episode KINGS ini dimulai dengan acara "the inauguration of Shiloh", ibukota Kerajaan Gilboa yang megah oleh King Silas. Kerajaan Gilboa telah lama berperang dengan seteru abadinya, kerajaan Gath (di dalam Alkitab, Gath adalah satu dari lima kota besar Filistin).

Kemudian kisahnya diarahkan kepada seorang pemuda sederhana, David Shepherd yang bekerja di bengkel milik keluarganya, disini ia pertama kali bertemu dengan Rev. Samuels yang sudah dapat melihat suatu nubuat bagi David bahwa ia akan menjadi orang besar. Kemudian seperti nasip telah menggariskannya, David si bungsu dari Keluarga Jesse Shepherd ikut berperang bersama kakaknya Eli, mereka bertempur melawan Gath. Sebagai prajurit muda yang belum berpengalaman, ternyata keberanian David melebihi yang lainnya. Ia masuk ke sarang musuh yang menyandera beberapa tentara Kerajaan Gilboa, tanpa ia sadari rupanya sang putera mahkota Jack Benjamin (Sebastian Stan) termasuk dalam sandera itu. Kemudian ia dengan gagah berani mendatangi tank-tank milik Gath dengan seorang diri, dan menariknya tank itu dinamai Goliat, dalam film ini. David meluncurkan "portable rocket" (Bazooka) yang dibawanya mampu menghancurkan tank Goliat dan membuat pasukan Gath itu mundur. Peristiwa tersebut secara instant membuat David Shepherd sebagai seorang pahlawan nasional, kemudian ia diundang ke ibukota Kerajaan. Di sini ia jatuh hati dengan putri kerajaan, Michelle Benjamin (Allison Miller), dan kemudian diangkat menjadi jubir Kerajaan untuk urusan pertahanan. David tidak menyadari bahwa hal-hal itu akan menyeretnya ke dalam liciknya politik kerajaan, dan bahwa ia hanya dimanfaatkan untuk kepentingan sesaat. Bagaimanapun, David menjadi semakin populer, ditambah lagi ketika ia menjadi tokoh yang turut andil dalam perdamaian dengan Kerajaan Gath.

Dalam acara peresmian ibukota di Shiloh itu, King Silas berceritera tentang pengalamannya bagaimana ia dipilih Tuhan menjadi raja bagi Gilboa. Bagaimana ia mendapat pengurapan khusus. Ia menceritakan pengalamannya melihat sekumpulan kupu-kupu berterbangan dan kemudian hinggap di kepalanya menyerupai mahkota, dan itu merupakan suatu tanda bahwa ia diijinkan Tuhan untuk memerintah. Namun di kesempatan lain, King Silas kemudian melihat bahwa David ketika berjalan di halaman istana, David ini pun dikerumuni kupu-kupu di kepalanya yang juga menyerupai mahkota. Mulai saat itu King Silas menjadi sangat iri kepada David. Karena simbolisme kupu-kupu di atas kepala David ini bermakna bahwa Tuhan telah meninggalkan King Silas. King Silas merasa sangat terancam posisinya sebagai raja , meskipun berkali-kali David membuktikan kesetiaannya kepada rajanya ini.

Hubungan antara King Silas dan David sangat kompleks. King Silas menyukai David, sekaligus membenci. Ia mengagumi sosok anak sederhana itu, sekaligus sangat iri kepadanya. Rasa cemburu yang berkobar-kobar ini membuatnya berkali-kali melakukan perbuatan untuk mencelakai David bahkan usaha-usaha untuk membunuhnya. Namun sepertinya David ini senantiasa dijagai para malaikat, ia senantiasa lolos dari perangkap-perangkap yang dirancangkan oleh King Silas.

King Silas mempunyai istri yang sangat cakap. Di dalam Alkitab, Ahinoam istri Raja Saul tidak banyak diceritakan. Namun dalam film ini, Ratu Rose (Susanna Thompson) menempati posisi yang penting, dialah yang membangun fondasi sistem monarki pada Kerajaan Gilboa, dan sekaligus kepala pengurus istana. Ia adalah ibu yang baik yang sekaligus keras dan berkuasa kepada anak-anaknya. Di lain hal Ratu Rose sering mengabaikan kebutuhan kebahagiaan anak-anaknya kecuali membangun 'citra kerajaan' yang harus selalu sempurna dihadapan rakyat Gilboa batapapun banyak pahit, getir dan kekotoran di dalam istana.

Diceritakan King Silas memiliki 5 anak dari Ratu Rose, namun kini tinggal 2 orang, Jack dan Michelle. Jack Benjamin, sang putra mahkota, selama ini belum pernah membuat ayahnya bangga. Jack adalah seorang closeted gay, yang bertindak seolah-olah penyuka wanita di tempat-tempat hiburan malam, lalu menemui kekasihnya secara tersembunyi. Juga terdapat masalah-masalah dalam hubungan antara David dan Michele. King Silas tidak menyukai hubungan mereka berkaitan dengan ketakutannya terhadap singgasananya yang terancam. Di lain pihak King Silas memiliki kasus perselingkuhan dengan perempuan lain hingga memiliki putra, dan herannya ia membiarkan rahasianya ini tidak hanya diketahui pembantu setianya Thomasina (Marlyne Afflack) saja, namun ia membiarkan David mengetahui hal ini juga.

Perpolitikan dalam istana King Silas ini semakin kompleks dengan adanya tokoh antagonis lainnya, yaitu saudara laki-laki Ratu Rose yang bernama William Cross (Dylan Baker) beserta anak laki-lakinya Andrew Cross (Macaulay Culkin). William Cross adalah sosok yang cukup berpengaruh di Gilboa, ia menguasai infrastruktur kota dan perekonomian di Shiloh. Ia menyukai perang karena berkaitan dengan binis senjata yang dimilikinya. King Silas sendiri terjebak di dalam manipulasi yang dilakukan William Cross. Hal ini menjadi mungkin, karena ternyata dulu King Silas ketika memperoleh posisi raja, adalah dengan mengkudeta saudaranya berkat bantuan sang ipar itu. Manipulasi ini terus menggerogoti King Silas hingga ancaman kepada nyawa King Silas sendiri, kemudian William menjadikan Jack sebagai raja pengganti yang berperan tidak lebih dari boneka baginya. Ketika kudeta itu terjadi. David mengambil inisyatif untuk menyelamatkan Sang Raja. Betapapun King Silas sudah sering bermaksud mencelakai David, ia tidak pernah membalas, sebaliknya ia kini semakin setia melayani rajanya dan menjaganya di tempat pengasingan sampai kembali lagi memerintah Gilboa. Sesampai di Shiloh dan mendapat kekuasaannya kembali sebagai raja. King Silas kembali kepada penyakit lamanya, King Silas tak dapat berterima kasih kepada jerih payah dan kesetiaan David, dan atas nasehat Rev. Samuels, David mengasingkan diri ke Gath agar aman dari buruan King Silas.

Film KINGS ini punya semuanya, ada iri, benci, roman dan intrik-intrik. Meski dikemas mirip dengan opera sabun, namun sajian sastranya lumayan bagus, dialog-dialognya menarik. Saya senang mendengar cara 'King Silas' berpidato, ada wibawa dan kuasa, dan ini membuat penontonnya seperti menonton Shakespearean drama. King Silas adalah tokoh antagonis yang sekaligus tokoh paling penting di film ini. Aktor Ian McShane berakting dengan sangat bagus, ia mampu membawa dirinya sebagai seorang 'King' dengan karakter yang sempurna. Meski dalam Alkitab menulis bahwa Raja Saul itu elok rupanya dan bertubuh bagus (1 Samuel 9:2), namun toh disini, Ian McShane punya pesona yang berbeda.

A stylish, imaginative movie where, once again, takeshi kaneshiro outshines the rest of the stuff in this movie.

Though it's only CG works, but it's fun to see the Duchess, Yoko sama, flying her little plane around. just like anime.

This movie reaffirms my belief that takeshi kaneshiro is indeed, the genius of asian cinema in my era. Not many good looking actors could pull off that kind of feat. One great movie after another, one great act after another.

'not into you', in my opinion, is an almost 'very good' movie.
it has too many sub-plots and some of the plots don't really fit well into the theme. but overall it's ok.
not like it teaches us anything new about relationship,
basically it says:
'when things don't work out..
you can always read up the rules and find some explanation.
but those rules won't make things work..
neither would those knowledge bring you any closer to that one person that works..
because love is often exceptional'
